Exams are finally over and I’m ready for Winter break! This break, I will be staying with my mom so that should cut some expenses, well at least until I go back to school which is sometime in late January. Here are 5 things that will help me save money this winter by staying at my moms house.
- Don’t have to pay for food. Although I have a a full meal plan at school, I still get tempted to order carry-outs. I go to school in Baltimore city and let me tell you there are Chinese carry outs everywhere and around every corner. I usually order once a week, but this winter break, this guy is gonna enjoy some home cooked meals : )
- Drive to work is much closer and will saves me gas. The usual commute to work is about an hour and ten minutes on average and from my moms house, it’s cut down to about 20minutes. This will saves me tons since we all know that gas is quite expensive.
- Laundry. Man, let me tell you that laundry at school is not cheap. It costs 2.75 per load!A dollar and fifty to wash and a dollar and twenty five to dry. So with 3 loads every other week, that’s about 8.25 that I spend. The cost of laundry at home, nothing.
- I am not around money spending people. Most of my friends at school are all high spenders and they don’t have to worry about their credit card expenses because their parents pays for it. Unfortunately in my case, I am stuck with all the bills.
- Rent and utilities? Nope, people would expect that one of the main benefits for living with your parents is that you’re not stuck with paying for rent. In my case, I have a full scholarship to my school which also pays for my dorm room and my utilities, however, I will be saving money this winter break for small expenses such as toilet paper, paper towels, junk food, and whatever else I won’t have to buy.
Well there you have it, these are all good reasons why you should stay with your parents if you can. My plan is, after I graduate I will be staying with my parents for about a year, that way I can contribute a lot more to my down-payment-for-a-house account.

Oh how I wish I could save money by going home for the holidays. I graduated last year so no more winter breaks for me. I’m still going home for a week. Unfortunately, I think I’ll probably end up spending more money while I’m there. Oh well. I’ll probably have to really scale back on my spending when I get back in order to recoup all the expenses.
btc,
Yes, it’s great to go home especially for the holidays. I wish I was at where you are now, done with school and all on my own. I can’t wait until I get out of school so I can actually start my life.
Wow,it is like reading one of my own posts. I have the same name and will be saving money over the holiday break from school in similar fashion.
